2023 was the first year that ARC exhibited at the PMMC conference, and we are proud to say that our presence was a huge hit. This show is an opportunity for industry leaders to discuss solutions to major issues hitting the industry, supply chain issues in a post COVID world. Not only was ARC able to showcase its old and new products, which range from in process verification and robust test and measurement solutions to our newest product ARC ESP, which strives to solve complex tech insertion problems in an easily supportable standardized way, but we were also able to engage in meaningful conversations with champions in the industry with whom we are discussing ways to join forces to solve our customers’ problems even more effectively.

Speaking of ARC ESP, the Engineering Support Platform was a major hit. We were able to show off its vast array of capabilities, including its ability to change its internal FPGA structure on the fly to solve almost any tech insertion problem or newly engineered FPGA solution. Our case studies on two of our radar specific applications, ASR and PAR drew a lot of attention from attendees and brought ARC into the light for many potential customers and partners.

One such industry leader, with whom we are excited to partner with in solving DMSMS and obsolescence issues, is Secure Components. Secure Components aims to innovate supply chain risk mitigation solutions, resulting in reduced risks and costs incurred in the sustainment of legacy systems. The Manufacturing Leadership Awards are given by the Manufacturing Leadership Council of the National Association of Manufacturers (NAM). In an exclusive with Trucker News, Kenworth’s assistant general manager for operations Judy McTigue said, “These two prestigious NAM Manufacturing Leadership awards for operational excellence are a special tribute to the employees at Kenworth Chillicothe. All of our employees are dedicated to achieving enhanced quality and productivity with the goal of providing ‘The World’s Best’ trucks to our customers.”

The team in Chillicothe partnered with ARC Technology Solutions to design custom software adapters capable of removing error from the fastening process using the existing Kenworth infrastructure. Kenworth’s SMART Tool Error Proofing System project applies a process-verification system which further improves torque-tightening quality and heightens efficiency by automating the tightening process throughout the plant.

“Our manufacturing, engineering and quality teams constantly explore and implement continuous initiatives to our world class manufacturing processes,” said Rod Spencer, plant manager for Kenworth Chillicothe. “The goal is to deliver an even better Kenworth truck that will provide years of productive service for fleets and truck operators.”

A software product could be the most useful application ever developed. It could have the ability to automate every aspect of your life and still have the processing power to make you a cup of coffee, all while never making a dent in your processor speeds. This innovation would allow you to catch up on those oh so important “business strategy blogs.”

Hey, if you’re watching cat videos and the cat is wearing a little tie, it’s work-appropriate, right?

But no matter how much a product can be used for, it is useless if it’s not easy to use.

Investing in a software’s usability is paramount in moving a product from “helpful” to “necessary.”So many major advances in personal technology, plus the fact that it is easier than ever for hobbyists to pick up some coding skills and develop their own applications, have saturated the market with understandable and easy to maneuver user interfaces. Customers are accustomed to using applications with little to no effort. Misplaced buttons, too many steps to set up an application or use a basic function, or even off-putting colors can turn a customer away. At the very least, it’ll be the loudest negative feedback, drowning out any positive functional aspects of the software. There is a reason UX engineering has exploded as a field in recent years.

So what? Do you need to throw your flagship software out the window and start over? Well, it might depend how well your software was put together in the first place. I enjoy separating spaghetti code, but my wife yells at me for playing with my food. Sometimes, a bathroom remodel requires tearing out walls and reinstalling the plumbing. Sometimes it requires a fresh coat of paint and a new sink. Usually, it’ll take a little bit of both. But if you don’t stub your toe on that misplaced vanity every morning on your sleepy-eyed walk to the toilet, it’ll all pay off in the end.

Here at ARC Technology Solutions, we are making product usability (read “Customer Satisfaction”) a priority. We often have developed our hardware to be as simple to use as possible, given any project’s specific requirements. Now that manner of thinking is being applied to our new and our long-standing software products as well. We are moving sinks, repairing some plumbing and giving the walls a new colorful look. We are targeting early 2020 to roll out some new releases of our longer standing products. ARC PVS for example, as well as a new suite of products are designed to help improve factory oversight and speed up assembly line throughput. All of these implements, while making it easier than ever to use the products in a more straightforward and easy to navigate layout, and a more intuitive interface to setup and manage your factory floor.

With products such as ARC PVS, Torque Tools and ARC TestCentre and we have striven to make operators’ tasks simpler and more efficient.

To start, ARC has released a Beta version of its ARC PVS station management software, tentatively called ARC Gatekeeper. It allows managers, supervisors and technicians to remotely view any ARC PVS station and aggregate reports from many for quicker analysis.

The plan for the product is an ambitious one. The product will expand its oversight of individual PVS stations to provide live statistical information about the processes currently running, the operators running them and the health of the processes. The product will have the ability to manage entire assembly lines, tracking all products moving through them, and coordinating error logging for the products. Stations can be grouped so that an assembly may not move down alignment until all operators are complete, or the assembly may continue down its path and incomplete data will be handled accordingly.
The power is in the hands of the manager with a click of a button. The product will also provide tool health, and we hope to allow it to manage stations that do not run ARC PVS – a complete Factory Health Management System.

This implement is only one of the many solutions that ARC Technology Solutions will have to offer in the coming months. We have products designed to improve error management, products designed to make difficult to reach tasks easier, and even products designed to bring operator interaction into a whole new dimension. All of these innovations, while focusing on usability, smart design and the user experience.
